3/22/2011 105 Days Old

March 22nd, 2011

On the 105th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully.  Maya slept well last night, and didn’t wake up until shortly before her 5:30 feeding.  I (Erin) woke up JJ to take care of her food since he had to get up for work anyway.  I fell back asleep until shortly before JJ left and Maya woke. She stayed awake until her 8:30 feeding. Maya slept then for a while so I could get some work done.

Michelle came over today to take care of Maya so I could work. Maya has been a little irritable today. Mostly while she is being fed.  Sometimes she calms down when she is eating, today was not the case.  Today it seemed that she calmed down after the flow of food stopped.  Other than eating, we had a good day. She slept, pooped, ate, slept some more, wiggled and chatted some.   Maya has been playing with her hands a lot lately.  She goes for her face especially.  She has several times actually managed to get her thumb in her mouth, but  as soon as she gets it there she realizes it doesn’t taste good and spits it back out.

Tonight I made a yummy dinner.  While I made dinner JJ played guitar for Maya.  She can definitely tell when her daddy plays for her.  She has definitely had a good musical education in her life, but she always reacts to dad playing to her.  Grandpa Bob  & Grandma Chris are here now and talking to Maya. She’s pretty awake now and is playing for the camera.

March 23rd, 2011

On the 106th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. Yesterday morning Maya made an attempt to keep me from returning to work. Right as I was leaving her oxygen level dropped and she sounded her alarm. She was able to get calm just before I left. This morning that was not the case. She stayed calm and asleep next to Erin as I got ready for work. When I left she was sleeping soundly next to her mom. It was a beautiful sight. My girls asleep in the morning.

While I was at work Grandma Patti came by to take care of Maya so that Erin could work. When I got home I asked how Maya had done today. Grandma said that she had been cuddly today. All that she wanted to do was to be held. In a blow to my ego as soon as I got home and picked her up her cuddly time was over. She groused until I put her down in her boopie. It doesn’t feel very good when she wants to be by herself. Luckily after an hour or so I was able to pick her up and get nestled into the couch. We sat there until dinner.

After dinner KC stopped by to see Maya. He was impressed with how big she has gotten. Shortly after he arrived Maya got herself into a cranky mood. She groused the entire time that he was here. right now she is getting a bath in the kitchen sink. Which is an activity that does not decrease her grousing. Tonight we debated the need for her bath. She won the argument for her mother when she assassinated another diaper. We thought she might be getting easier on the diapers. It has been a few days since we have lost a onesie. She made up for it tonight. Apparently she was saving up for a truly spectacular display of diaper intimidation. The onesie never saw it coming.

3/24/2011 107 Days Old

March 24th, 2011

On the 107th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. I had to work this morning and Maya stayed asleep as I got ready for work. When I got home Maya was asleep on the couch. She had a good day today. There were a few times today when she would get cranky and not respond to any comforting we could give her. This only happened a few times today. She was a little bit cranky when I got home. Eventually she calmed down and we took a nap on the couch.

Earlier today Michelle came by to take care of Maya so that Erin could work. This evening Grandma Kathy came by to help us clean and get some Maya time. Maya is sleeping in her boppie now. There wasn’t much going on today. Maya did have a nurses visit today. There were no changes in her condition. She seems to have leveled out. She struggles, but she gets through. We are looking forward to our weekend at home with the most beautiful girl in the history of the world.

3/25/2011 108 Days Old

March 25th, 2011

On the 108th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. I had a half day of work this morning, and Erin had to work all day. I was eager to get home to little Maya after work. Grandma Patti had come over to take care of Maya while I was at work. They were resting on the couch when I got home. I got to snuggle up on the couch with her for most of the afternoon. We watched a movie, I played guitar for her, and we just sat and napped a little.

This evening was much busier than the afternoon. Krissie, Travis, Ruth and Lowell came by to see Maya. Grandpa Bob and Grandma Chris also came by. Ruth and Lowell got to see Maya for the first time while Grandma Chris made dinner for us. Maya was in a good mood for most of the night. She is sleeping on grandma’s lap now.

It was an uneventful day. Maya had some trouble spitting up after her 2:30 feeding. She gets most of the spit up out but has trouble clearing out her throat afterward. I suctioned out her mouth, and patted her on the back until she recovered. Other than that episode she had a great day.

March 27th, 2011

On the 110th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. We had to rest up last night after a big day. Yesterday Grandpa Chris and Grandma Lynn were in town. They came in from Jersey to see Maya. We had a full house. KC and Michelle, Esther, Micah, and Luke, and Bj all came by to hang out last night. We sat around and took turns holding Maya.

After a full day we were ready for some rest. We slept in this morning as best as we could. We had a much more mellow day today than yesterday. Grandpa Chris and Grandma Lynn came by to see Maya before they headed home. Krissie and Travis came by as well. It was a good day except for the snow coming down. It is too late in the year to be happy to see snow. It was 80 last week, what the heck happened.

Maya had a pretty good weekend. She had a tough morning on saturday, but she recovered as is doing well today. She slept for most of the weekend, knocked out a few diapers, and slept some more. Tonight it is just the three of us. five if you count Maya’s furry sisters. I’m going to get back to my girls now. Goodnight

3/28/2011 111 Days Old

March 28th, 2011

On the 111th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. Erin had to work this morning so I was on my own taking care of Maya for a few hours. After Erin left Maya did not want to go back to sleep. I stayed up with her until Grandma Patti got here to help out. After which I took a three hour nap. It was nice. Luckily I didn’t miss a thing Maya slept the whole time.

It was a good day. Maya has not had any cranky spells today. She did spit up and get a little chokey twice, but she recovered quickly. She has been awake all evening. Grandpa Greg came by after work to see her. Grandma Kathy came by and made us dinner. We got some good Maya time in tonight. We tried tummy time for a while. She did not repeat her newest trick. On saturday durring tummy time she rolled over for the first time. We layed her down on her belly and she pulled her knees up under her and through her head to the side until she was lying on her side. It was a big milestone. Today she was not interested in doing it herself tonight. She figured if she waited long enough I would turn her back over. She was right. I guess we will just have to be ok with her best skill being diaper assassination.

3/29/2011 112 Days Old

March 29th, 2011

On the 112th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. I got ready for work while Erin and Maya snuggled in bed. We were practicing family bed this morning. The three of us were crammed into our little bed. Erin took my getting ready for work as an opportunity to spread out into my sleep space. When I left for work they were both asleep.

When I got home from work Erin was working on her laptop as Maya slept in her boppy. I made the mistake of pulling her out of slumber before she wanted to wake up. She let us know that wasn’t cool. She was calmed down by the time that Grandpa Bob and Grandma Chris came by. We also had a late visit from Maya’s nurse tonight. Maya has been doing really well the last few days and the nurses visit didn’t change our opinion on that. She has been off tylenol since sunday night. We think that she might have been more irritable because of her RSV vaccine. That was two weeks ago. Hopefully that was what was causing her irritablility, and she can be a little more comfortable for a while.

Maya is sitting in grandpa’s lap now. Erin and grandma are doing a craft project at the dinning room table. We are listening to Keb’ Mo’. It has been a while since I posted Maya’s playlist, but rest assured her musical education is still ongoing.

3/30/2011 113 Days Old

March 30th, 2011

On the 113th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. I moved Maya from her bed into mine and Erin’s before I left for work. They were fast asleep when I left. When I got home Maya and Grandma Patti were on the couch. Maya was awake, but not for long. She was wearing a new outfit today. She now fits into many of the 0-3 size clothes that up until now had remained lonely in the closet. She is also controlling her temperature better than last week and we are able to put her into some long sleeved and long  legged outfits. Before dinner she got a bath, and now she is in another new outfit. That sure makes mom happy. I think she looks cutest in just a diaper, but these new clothes are nice too.

Tonight it was just the three of us. We ate dinner together, I played guitar for Maya, and we watched a little TV. Today has been a mommy day for Maya. She let grandma know all day long that she just wanted her mom. Erin would hold her and calm her down, but she did have to work. I’m sure it was hard for her to get her work done, but I think she probably enjoyed being needed by her little girl. I wish I could have seen it.

As I began to write this post Maya was a little cranky. She just went through two diapers in about ten minutes, and she is not always a fan of diaper changes. Erin was holding her and trying to comfort her when I turned on some music. I started to play my new Keb’ Mo’ CD. From the moment the first chord was strummed Maya stopped squaking and calmed down. I guess she likes her music. I don’t mind that a bit. It makes me feel connected to her somehow. On days like today we absolutely know that she is my daughter, and Erin is her mom.

3/31/2011 114 Days Old

March 31st, 2011

On the 114th day in the life of the most beautiful girl in the history of the world the morning began peacefully. Maya was not cranky, but she was awake. She was awake at 3:00 this morning. By about 4:00 we decided that she might be hungry even though she was not really crying. We fed her at 4:00 and eventually she fell back asleep 5:30. She didn’t mind being up she had slept all day. Me and Erin on the other hand are a little sleep deprived today. Well more Erin, but I was up some too.

When I got home from work today grandma Kathy and Maya were asleep on the couch. Well Maya was asleep. Grandma was awake. At about 5:00 two very special people came by to see us, and by us I mean Maya. Angie and Trisha came by and brought us dinner. Seeing them again brought back some memories. We spent the first few days of Maya’s life in the care of these wonderful people.

The first time I met Angie was in the C section room. I could only see her eyes. Just like all surgeries everyone in the room was in a cap and mask. She took Maya from the C section room to the NICU as I followed behind. When we got to the NICU Maya was placed in a warmer and I was stationed at her left side. I remember thinking that there was a lot going on, and I was aware of none of it. Several people stirred around me as I got to look at Maya. Shortly after we got to the NICU, as the nurses and doctors went about their work with Maya, I heard a beeping sound that was unfamiliar to me, but that I will always remember. Maya’s alarm was going off. Her oxygen saturation had dropped  causing the alarm to draw Angie’s attention. I remember that before I knew what was going on Angie had swiped her hand in under Maya’s back and flipped her up off of the warmer, startling her, and silencing the alarm. I did not know who this women was that could save my daughter by flipping her in the air. I did not know what any of that was at the time, but now I know that it was Maya’s first apnea. Angie was stimulating her to bring her out of the apnea. That scene repeated a few more times before Maya was stable enough to be moved to our room to see Erin. I had no idea who was hidden behind the mask. I had never seen her face just her eyes peaking out, and she had pulled my daughter from an apnea multiple times. Shortly after Angie removed her mask and I got to meet her.

She was in our room when we got to know her better. She gave Maya her first bath, and took care of her for the first 12 hours. When she comes over I tell Maya that the woman who saved your life three times is coming to see you. That may be an exaggeration, but that is how I see it. We are so thankful for the love and care that we got from all of our wonderful nurses. And we are happy that this blog allows them to still be a part of Maya’s life. They have a special place in our hearts.

Tomorrow the regular blog will return. We will have all of the normal stories about Maya and diaper assassination. Tonight I just wanted to share a story and show my appreciation for all of the wonderful people that have sent some love our way.
